How to Choose the Right DVR or NVR for Your CCTV System | Nakuru CCTV Experts

Cameras get all the attention. But the recorder matters more than you think.

You can buy the best cameras in the world, but if your DVR or NVR doesn't have enough channels, storage, or processing power, your system will fail when you need it most. The recorder is where footage is processed and stored. It's the brain of the operation.

This guide will help you choose the right one — whether you're building a new system or upgrading an existing one.

Quick Recap: DVR vs NVR

If you need a refresher, here's the simple version:

  • DVR (Digital Video Recorder) – works with analog cameras. Coaxial cables. Lower cost, lower resolution.
  • NVR (Network Video Recorder) – works with IP cameras. Ethernet cables. Higher resolution, better features.

1. Channel Count: Match Your Current & Future Needs

The channel count is how many cameras a recorder can support. If you buy a 4-channel DVR, you can only connect 4 cameras. If you later want to add an 8th camera, you'll need to upgrade the recorder too.

Here's a simple rule: buy a recorder with more channels than you currently need. It gives you room to expand without replacing everything.

Current Cameras Recommended Recorder Channels
2 4 or 8
4 8 or 16
8 16 or 32
16 32 or 64
32+ 64 or larger

2. Storage Capacity: How Many Days Do You Need?

Storage is determined by the hard drive inside the recorder. The larger the drive, the more days of footage you can keep. Most homes are fine with 1TB to 2TB. Businesses and farms often need 4TB or more.

See our storage guide for exact estimates based on camera count and resolution.

3. Resolution Support: Match Your Cameras

Make sure the recorder supports the resolution of your cameras. If you have 8MP cameras, you need a recorder that can handle 8MP input. Putting a high-resolution camera on a low-end recorder wastes the camera's potential.

4. PoE vs Non-PoE (NVR Only)

Many NVRs come with built-in PoE (Power over Ethernet) ports. This means the cameras get power and data through the same Ethernet cable — no separate power supply needed. This simplifies installation and is very common for new IP systems.

If you already have a network switch, you might prefer a non-PoE NVR. We can advise during a free site survey.

5. Remote Viewing & Mobile Access

Modern recorders all support remote viewing, but the app experience varies. Hikvision uses Hik-Connect, Dahua uses DMSS, and Uniview has its own app. All three work well. Make sure the recorder you choose supports smooth mobile access if that's important to you. Learn why remote viewing matters.

Our Recommendation for Nakuru

For most Nakuru homes and small businesses, we recommend an 8 or 16-channel NVR with a 2TB hard drive. It provides room to expand, supports high-resolution IP cameras, and keeps 2–4 weeks of footage. For larger properties, we scale up accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a 4-channel and 16-channel recorder?

A 4-channel recorder supports up to 4 cameras. A 16-channel supports up to 16. Buy more channels than you currently need so you can expand later.

Can I use an NVR with analog cameras?

No. NVRs work with IP cameras. If you have analog cameras, you need a DVR or a hybrid recorder that supports both.

How much storage do I need for 8 cameras?

For 8 cameras at 2MP recording continuously, a 2TB drive gives you about 7–10 days. Motion-based recording extends this significantly. Read our storage guide.

Do all recorders support remote viewing?

Most modern DVRs and NVRs support remote viewing via a mobile app. We set this up for free on every installation.

Can I upgrade my DVR to an NVR later?

Yes. We can replace your DVR with an NVR and upgrade analog cameras to IP. See our maintenance and upgrade services.

What brands of recorders do you install?

We install Hikvision, Dahua, and Uniview recorders — all known for reliability and good performance. Read our brand comparison.
