CCTV Bandwidth: How Much Internet Speed Do You Need? | Nakuru CCTV Experts

Your cameras record fine without internet. But remote viewing is another story.

A common misconception is that CCTV needs internet to record. It doesn't. Your DVR or NVR records footage locally, even with no internet at all. Internet is only needed when you want to view your cameras remotely from your phone or PC.

The speed and stability of your internet connection determine how smoothly that remote viewing works. Too little bandwidth = laggy, buffering video. Enough bandwidth = smooth live viewing. This guide explains what you need.

Upload Speed Matters More Than Download

When you view cameras remotely, your recorder uploads video to your phone. So the critical number is your internet's upload speed, not download speed. Most home internet plans advertise download speed (e.g., 10 Mbps), but the upload speed is often much lower (sometimes only 1–2 Mbps).

For remote viewing, you need at least 2 Mbps upload per camera you want to view simultaneously in high quality. If you only view one camera at a time, 2 Mbps upload is enough for most standard resolutions.

How Much Bandwidth Each Camera Uses

Here's a rough guide to upload bandwidth required per camera at different resolutions:

Resolution Upload Speed per Camera
2MP (1080p) 2–4 Mbps
4MP (2K) 4–6 Mbps
8MP (4K) 8–12 Mbps

*These are approximate values for high-quality streaming. Actual usage depends on compression, frame rate, and whether you're viewing live or recorded footage.

What That Means in Real Life

  • Viewing one 2MP camera: 2 Mbps upload is enough.
  • Viewing four 2MP cameras simultaneously: 8 Mbps upload recommended.
  • Viewing one 8MP camera: 8–10 Mbps upload.
  • Viewing multiple high-res cameras: You'll need a business-grade connection with 10+ Mbps upload.

If your internet is slow, you can still view cameras remotely by lowering the stream quality or viewing one camera at a time. Our team can configure the system to work efficiently with your available bandwidth.

How to Reduce Bandwidth Usage

  • View cameras one at a time instead of a multi-camera grid
  • Lower the stream quality in the app settings
  • Use motion-based recording to reduce the amount of footage uploaded for playback
  • Use H.265 compression if your recorder supports it — it uses about 50% less bandwidth than H.264

Frequently Asked Questions

Does CCTV work without internet?

Yes. CCTV records locally to a DVR/NVR without internet. Internet is only needed for remote viewing from your phone.

What is the minimum internet speed for remote CCTV viewing?

For a single 2MP camera, 2 Mbps upload speed is usually enough. For multiple cameras or higher resolutions, you'll need more.

Does viewing cameras use a lot of mobile data?

Yes, if you watch continuously. A few minutes of live viewing can use hundreds of megabytes. We recommend using Wi‑Fi for extended viewing.

Can I lower the quality to save data and bandwidth?

Yes. Most apps let you choose between HD and standard quality. Lower quality uses less data and less bandwidth.

What is H.265 compression?

H.265 is a video compression standard that uses about half the bandwidth of older H.264 while maintaining similar quality. Learn more about recorders that support it.

Can you set up my system to work on slow internet?

Yes. We configure remote viewing to work efficiently even on 3G/4G connections. See how remote viewing works.
