Daytime footage is easy. Night footage separates good cameras from bad ones.
Any camera can record in daylight. But the real test comes after sunset. If your night vision is blurry, grainy, or completely black, you won't be able to identify anyone. That's a serious problem because most incidents happen at night.
1. Look for full‑colour night vision
Traditional night vision gives you black‑and‑white images. Newer full‑colour cameras capture colour even in very low light. This makes it much easier to identify clothing, vehicles, and faces.
2. Check the infrared (IR) range
IR distance tells you how far the camera can see in total darkness. For most Nakuru homes, 20–30 metres is enough. For farms and large compounds, you may need 50 metres or more.
3. Avoid cheap "night vision" claims
Many budget cameras claim night vision but produce useless images. If a camera promises 4K night vision for KSh 2,500, it's lying. Stick with known brands like Hikvision, Dahua, and Uniview. Read our brand comparison.
4. Consider your lighting conditions
If your compound is pitch black at night, you'll need cameras with strong IR or full‑colour sensors. If you have some ambient light from streetlights or security lights, you'll get better results with less powerful cameras.
5. Placement matters at night too
A camera pointing directly at a bright light will be blinded. Avoid placing cameras facing streetlights, headlights, or direct sunlight. Our free site survey covers this. Book one here.
